ASIA: Weekly Roundup, Episode 61

This week’s episode of Weekly Roundup brings you stories from across Asia

The episode begins in Sri Lanka where the former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake is being reinstated and the recent de facto Chief Justice Mohan Peiris has been ousted; a victory for the return to rule of law.

AHRC TV then turns to Bangladesh where the Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion has made disturbing comments on the use of lethal force.

In Burma, 2 young Kachin teachers were found dead, apparent victims of torture and sexual assault in their home. An army battalion was camped nearby because of recent conflict in the area leading some to speculate that they were involved.

A group of young men in Nepal was arrested and tortured by police. One of them was released due to a broken leg he sustained in custody, but the others remain locked up without warrant.

The program ends with the keynote address of AHRC director Basil Fernando in Kandy regarding the recent developments in Sri Lanka.
