ASIAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION - URGENT APPEALS PROGRAMME

Urgent Appeal Case: UP-58-2002
ISSUES: Freedom of religion, Torture,

Regarding the recent attack on the office of IDAR-E-AMN-O-INSAF (Institute for Justice and Peace), where seven innocent Christians were murdered on 25 September 2002 in Karachi, Mr. Robin Peeran Ditta (32), the only surviving employee at the time of the incident, has been illegally confined in police custody. Instead of arresting the real culprits, Mr. Ditta has been taken into police custody and considered as a suspect because he life was spared. Since the confinement, family members have been barred from visitation. Family and community members fear for his safety and believe that he is being tortured, as he already suffered a heart attack while in police custody.

Therefore, we request you to send an appeal to the President of Pakistan to express your concern about the safety of Robin Peeran Ditta.

Thank you for your action.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Please send your appeal to the President of Pakistan, urging him to guarantee Mr. Ditta’s safety and right to have access to lawyers and family, and be provided with proper medical treatment. You may use your own words or use the following as a sample.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear President,

I am writing to express my concern about Mr. Robin Peera Ditta (32), the only survivor of the recent attack on the office of IDAR-E-AMN-O-INSAF (Institute for Justice and Peace), Karachi, where seven innocent Christians were murdered. Mr. Ditta has been illegally confined and investigated under police custody, due to suspicion since the incident.

Even though it is necessary to investigate him as a witness of the incident, I cannot understand why Mr. Ditta has been illegally confined in police custody for a long time, moreover why family and other relatives are barred from visiting. As a result, family and other Christian community members are extremely concerned about his safety and believed that he is being tortured. I have also been informed that he suffered from a heart attack while in police custody and is now in poor health.

Therefore, I urge you to guarantee his safety and right to have access to lawyers and family, and be provided with proper medical treatment. Needless to say, the culprits of the murder must be brought to justice as soon as possible.

I look forward to learning about your prompt attention to this matter.

Thank you.

Sincerely yours,
