BURMA/MYANMAR: Statement on violent crackdown on student protectors at Lapadan-West Pegu Region by Police Force

A Statement from Human Rights Defenders and Promoters (HRDP) forwarded by the Asian Human Rights Commission

Violent crackdown on the students, monks, journalists, and supporting civilians demanding education reform on 10 March 2015 in Lepadan is totally unlawful and obviously violating the agreement that the government signed on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Civil society groups, local NGO, INGOs, and the international community have repeatedly requested the Myanmar government to handle the strike without violence. However, the government has ignored the request and cracked down with violence. Hence, HRDP strongly condemns the human rights violations committed by the government by issuing this statement.

HRDP’s Demand:

  1. Immediately release all the students, monks, journalists, and supporting civilians who have been arrested in relation to the strike.
  2. Investigate and take immediate action against officials involved in the violent crackdown.

HRDP stands together with the students.
