ASIA: Weekly Roundup, Episode 34

Hong Kong is the focus of the 34th episode of Human Rights Asia Weekly Roundup.

There has been growing anxiety in Hong Kong that Beijing is working to erode freedoms guaranteed under Hong Kong’s Basic Law. Recently, Beijing issued a White Paper asserting authority over Hong Kong and outlining the requirement of “patriotism” for all government officials, including judges.

To keep a finger on the pulse, AHRC TV tracks the annual July 1st march, which has turned out to be the biggest demonstration in a decade. Over half a million people gathered to voice their desire for real democratic reform.

For insight into the schism between the aspirations of Hong Kong people and the objectives of the Chinese government, and to ascertain the implications of the White Paper, AHRC TV joins Hong Kong barrister Y.L. Cheung and Solicitor John Joseph Clancey for a discussion.
