UPDATE (Nepal): Legal aid NGO is now allowed to access to detainees at the Kanchanpur detention centre

ASIAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION - URGENT APPEALS PROGRAMME

Urgent Appeal Case: UP-055-2007
ISSUES: Human rights defenders,

Dear friends,

The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) is happy to inform you that Advocacy Forum, one of the leading human rights organizations in Nepal providing legal aid services to detainees, now feely accesses to prisoners at the Kanchanpur detention centre.  Advocacy Forum, had been refused access to prisoners at the centre since 7 February 2007. To see details of the original incident, please see: UA-070-2007.

We were informed by the Advocacy Forum that the Superintendent of Police of Kanchanpur is now very apologetic, invites Advocacy Forum’s lawyers to offer legal aid and allow them to access the detention centre.

The Advocacy Forum also confirmed that such progress was made because Ministry of Home Affairs, after receiving so many appeal letters every day, directed the SP of Kanchanpur to respond to this matter.

The Advocacy Forum said, “the UA really had a good impact to solve the problem”. It also thanked to all those who sent the appeal letters to the government authorities regarding this matter.

The AHRC again thanks for your great support for this urgent appeal.

Thank you.
