BRIEF SUMMARY: The wife of former Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is under intense intimidation, harassment and harsh conditions are imposed on her. The team of 8 lawyers involved in the Anwar Ibrahim case were summoned by police. International news censorship continues with CNNs news on Anwar censored. 3 more detained under ISA.

RELEASED: 126 people arrested for protesting outside the court are released on police bail.

SERVED WITH ISA ORDER DR. WAN AZIZAH: Dr. Wan Azizah, wife of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was summoned by police to investigate her claims regarding the well-being of Anwar for a CNBC news programme and to give witness statements to the police. She is being investigated under the Sedition Act S 4(1).

On 23 September 1998 she was also served an order under the Internal Security Act, which forbiddens her to have gatherings at her home, to speak at public rallies or be involved in ‘political’ activities. Visitors have been barred from entering her home with the exception of close relatives, lawyers and press with signed invitations from Dr. Wan Azizah. There are police roadblocks set up in the two roads leading to the house and armed police guard both gates of the house.

LAWYERS OF ANWAR SUMMONED BY POLICE: The 8 lawyers involved in the Anwar Ibrahim case have been summoned and to give witness statements to the police. This means that these 8 lawyers may not be able to serve as Anwar’s legal counsels if the police decides that these lawyers has to testify for the police.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS CENSORED: CNN news report at 1 am Malaysian time on Anwar was censored on television.

RECOMMENDED ACTION: You are requested to write letters and faxes to the Malaysian authorities urging: – all ISA detainees be released immediately without conditions including Anwar Ibrahim; – if authorities have evidence that the detainees including Anwar have broken the law they should be given a open and fair trial in a courts of law; – that police brutality at peaceful gatherings of citizens be curbed immediately; and the right to freedom of assembly and expression be respected. – to stop all censorship of media in safeguarding the freedom of expression and right to information by the people of Malaysia; – condemned the detention of various people under the Internal Security Act(ISA)
