HUMAN RIGHTS DAY STATEMENT: Governments Ignore U.N. Human Rights Conventions and Domestic Laws

ASIAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION - URGENT APPEALS PROGRAMME

Urgent Appeal Case: UA-64-2002
ISSUES: International human rights mechanisms,

Dear Friends,

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day (Dec. 10), the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has released a statement entitled “Effective Remedies Are Ineffective in Asia: Governments Ignore U.N. Human Rights Conventions and Domestic Laws.”

In the statement, AHRC emphasises that Human Rights Day this year must be an occasion to renew our resolve to face up to difficult challenges in order to protect and promote human rights in Asia. The main initiative in this endeavor, however, must be by the people themselves. An exuberant human rights movement of the people, committed to the people’s welfare and relying mainly on its own strength, can make the difference. The ordinary people’s sense of dignity and their commitment to assert their rights is the only ground on which human rights, democracy and people-oriented development can take place.
