CALL FOR DONATIONS FOR FLOOD VICTIMS!
08 August 2012

Dear friends,

The Center for Trade Union and Human Rights together with Task Force Obrero is writing to you to seek donation, in good or in kind, to more than a million Filipinos in Luzon gravely affected by the incessant rains due to the southwest monsoon beginning Sunday, August 05, 2012.

Situation

Official reports of the government recorded at least 267,850 families or 1,230,813 persons affected by the monsoon rains in five regions in Luzon namely Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa and Metro Manila. Around 167,003 families or 737,707 individuals were reportedly displaced from their homes because of heavy floods. Millions of pesos worth of properties were reported

As of August 7, at least 16 individuals have reportedly died due to drowning, electrocution and landslide; nine of them were buried to death after a landslide in a community in Commonwealth, Quezon City.

Rescue operations are still ongoing as heavy rains continue as of this writing. Meanwhile, thousands of affected families are still in evacuation areas inside and outside Metro Manila. Most of these families come from poor communities and were barely able to save any of their properties.

Heavy rains brought about by the southwest monsoon aggravated by a low pressure area north of the Philippines started Sunday, August 05, 2012. Meteorologists recorded over 472mm of rainfall in a span of 22 hours. Major dams in Luzon already reached critical levels causing rivers to overflow and submerge nearby communities. Eighty percent of Metro Manila have been flooded since Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012. Waters in heavily flooded areas are expected to subside by the weekend.

Relief Operations and Call for Donations

In response to this disaster, CTUHR and Task Force Obrero is holding daily relief operations in affected villages (barangays) in Marikina City and in Bagong Silangan and Novaliches, Quezon City.
