Sri Lanka: Petition against police inaction in Katunayake attack

Several organisations and leading activists in Sri Lanka have launched a public petition calling the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to provide reasons for not taking any legal action against those who attacked the Nava Sama Samaja Party general secretary at Colombo’s Katunayake international airport.

NSSP General Secretary Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratne returning from the United Kingdom on the 7th of December 2010 was set upon by a group led by Suresh Kumar Gunarathne, son of the Deputy Minister of State Resources & Enterprise Development, Sarath Gunarathne. Journalist Shantha Wijesuriya and NSSP members including women were also attacked by the group while some who came to receive Bahu managed to save him from being injured.

The petition against police inaction in bringing the identified assailants to justice will be handed over to the IGP on the 24th of March following a public assembly in front of the Fort railway station.

Attorneys at law Chandrapala Kumarage and SG Punchihewa along with Sandhya Eknaligoda, Mahinda Dewage, Dharmasiri Lankapeli, M K Sivajilingam, V Thirunavakkarasu, Ajith Rupasinghe and Premapala Hewabatage launching the petition appeal to all who respect the rule of law to extend their support by adding their signature.
