SRI LANKA: Study on the prevalence of CIDTP

Please find attached the link for a Study on the prevalence, determinants and causes of torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (CIDTP) in Sri Lanka. http://material.ahrchk.net/srilanka/AHRC-FST-024-2009-CIDTP.pdf

The study seeks to give a comprehensive breakdown of the legal and institutional set-up in Sri Lanka and analyses whether the system lives up to international standards. Further, the Study seeks to analyze how this legal and institutional framework functions in practice in order to identify possible gaps in the system that may lead to the occurrence of torture and CIDTP. The study also offers a list of specific recommendations on how to reform the police, the prisons and oversight bodies.

The Study has been conducted by a local Sri Lankan lawyer with the support of the Danish based Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Torture Victims.

We hope that the study may provide important background information for your work in Sri Lanka and we encourage you to share the study with other organizations that you think may find the study relevant for their work as well.
