This book contains a collection of three publications by the Asian Human Rights Commission on the theme of human rights and spirituality. It represents the thought of many persons and group reflections. The attempt has been to connect the human rights debate with the religious and philosophical debates in recent decades, particularly that in Asia. Thus, it represents a unique initiative that takes human rights awareness to a larger group of people rather than the usual activist groups. It is also an answer to some critics of human rights who disguise defence of regional and local forms of discrimination with an anti-Western rhetoric.

The reflections in this volume show deep resentment against grave forms of discriminations existing regionally as well as globally. However, such resentment is combined with creative thoughts. Asian heritage has been looked into critically. An able and honest review of one’s traditions is combined with a genuine search for roots. How to live and work humanly in the actual context of today is the central question that has been addressed.

Many of the reflections are critical of some aspects of all religious traditions. Some ideals themselves are challenged in the same way as Robert Frost does in his poem – A Masque of Reason – on the biblical story of Job. This approach can be summed up in a quote of B. R. Ambedkar, the great Indian leader of Dalits: “My quarrel with Hindus and Hinduism is not over the imperfections of their social conduct. It is much more fundamental. It is over their ideals.”

This volume makes interesting reading. It is hoped that it will help to enliven the debate on human rights and enlarge the human rights lobby.
