BANGLADESH: Authoritarian obstinacy wins, democracy loses

Statement : Without any surprise, the Bangladesh Awami League, the primary ruling party, has emerged winner in 232 in a total of 300 parliamentary seats. A whopping 153 seats were won uncontested. The Bangladesh Awami League itself won 127 seats uncontested. Its allies mopped up the rest, save for 13 seats won by candidates that appear to be “independent”, their having been “denied” ruling party tickets. Read More...
