Urgent Appeals Programme

The AHRC Urgent Appeal Programme has created a network of contacts consisting of thousands of persons and organisations who deal with human rights violation in Asia. It operates on a daily basis linked to a world-wide e-mail alert network that informs the public about what is happening in other countries and urges them to act on behalf of the victims. It raises public awareness and sensitises people to human rights violations, and provides them a legitimate channel of expressing concerns. Appeals remind government and authorities that people from many places are concerned about the human rights violations and are watching how they carry out the demands of remedy. In some cases, such knowledge can temper the otherwise brutal methods of an authoritarian government and can at times prevent inhuman treatment of detainees.

The AHRC Urgent Appeal Programme also functions pro-actively, through means such as roundtable discussions, forums, press statements and conferences. Urgent appeals are an on-going, full-time concern. Email: ua@ahrchk.org
